High potential and gifted education

Some students learn faster and more easily than others, shining in areas like creativity, thinking, leadership, or sport. At our school, we recognise that these students often learn differently from the average learner, thinking outside the box and excelling through unique talents that may not always fit the traditional academic mould.

Through our High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) program, we celebrate and nurture these diverse strengths. We are committed to providing enriching and flexible learning opportunities that challenge and inspire every student to reach their full potential, no matter how they learn or where their talents lie.

What is high potential and gifted education?

HPGE stands for High Potential and Gifted Education. It means providing learning experiences that meet the needs of students who show exceptional abilities or talents. At our school, we understand that giftedness isn’t just about being great at schoolwork — it can show in many different ways.

The NSW Department of Education identifies four important areas, or domains, where students might show high potential:

  1. Intellectual: Thinking deeply and solving complex problems.
  2. Creative: Using imagination to come up with original ideas and solutions.
  3. Academic: Achieving high results and understanding subjects quickly.
  4. Social and Emotional: Being aware of feelings and building strong relationships.

By recognising these areas, we make sure every student’s strengths are supported and challenged, helping them to grow and achieve their best.

We do this through:

Our high potential and gifted education opportunities

In our classroom
In the classroom, this means providing students with challenges and activities that help them think deeply, learn faster, and explore their strengths. Teachers use special strategies to make sure these students stay engaged and continue to grow, while also making sure all students learn in ways that suit them best.
Across our school
Across the school, it involves creating a supportive environment where all students with advanced abilities or talents are recognised and encouraged to reach their full potential. This means that from the youngest grades to the senior years, the school provides opportunities, resources, and programs to challenge and support these students in various areas such as academics, creativity, leadership, and problem-solving.
Across NSW
Across NSW, it refers to the programs and support provided by the Department of Education to help students with high abilities or talents across the state. These initiatives are designed to ensure all students, regardless of where they live, have access to learning opportunities that challenge them, help them develop their skills, and support their success in school and beyond.
