Emerald

Teacher: Mrs Maria Parker

Week 4

Another busy week for Emerald.. we had one final day of NAPLAN and a day for catch-ups, the cross country carnival was on Wednesday, and we had our second assembly for Term 2.

Emerald was also very excited to see that we have read 100 books as a class for the Premier's Reading Challenge!! Jumeirah and Leah have even already completed their 20 books for the challenge. Proud is an understatement!!

To top of the week, we also won the attendance this week and got to enjoy our zooper doopers on Friday! Keep it up Emerald

Term 2

Students in Emerald have settled straight back into our class routines and have been busy learning!

This week Year 6 students were also very happy to receive their Year 6 jerseys. All students had a say in designing the look of the jerseys and I think it's safe to say that they look AMAZING!

This term, we have started informative writing and students have been discussing what we need to include in an informative text, we have discussed financial plans in Mathematics and have even used Microsoft Excel to create a plan! Students are continuing to work on their laptops to create a presentation to highlight their knowledge of the 3 levels of government in Australia.

Students completed some final NAPLAN practice on Monday, ready for the assessments during the week. As all NAPLAN assessments are online now, students had time to familiar themselves with the system and practice their typing skills. It was definitely a busy week with all Year 5 participating. We are very proud of all students as we know it can be a stressful and anxious time.

Term 1

Emerald have had an amazing start to 2022!

All students have settled into our new class routines effortlessly. We began our year by creating a class agreement to be CHAMPS which includes expectations on conversation, help, activity, movement and participation in the classroom to be successful. Our classroom has started to take shape as we have started to fill it with our learning goals and anchor charts as well as some fantastic artwork. We start our days by reading for enjoyment from Anh Do's Ninja Kid series (we are up to book 3 already and loving it!!).

This term is a productive term filled with so many interesting topics - creating imaginative texts in writing, focusing on addition, subtraction and multiplicative place value in mathematics, learning about Australia as a nation in history, discovering the desert in science and learning to be safe during PDH. GOT games and drumming also fills our week.

Keep your eye on this space to see what other wonderful things the students in 5/6 Emerald come up with!

Mrs Parker.

First Foot Forward is a program run by Western Sydney University. It is a program that allows Stage 3 students to see what the options are after primary and high school and allow them to start thinking about the types of subjects they may need to study in order to get into the course they want to do in University.

First Foot Forward came out this week and led the introductory session and gave the Stage 3 students a lot of information to think about regarding University. The students were very engaged and excited when First Foot Forward ran a design activity that showcased what types of things they could do if they enrolled in a Design course at uni.

Emerald has been enjoying completing Number Talks daily in our classroom before our Mathematics lesson. It allows students to complete mental computations and explain the strategies they use to a peer. Students have commented that they feel they are improving in their addition and subtraction ability as they now have multiple strategies they can use, instead of just the 1!

Year 6 hosted their first Mufti Day fundraiser to raise funds for their Year 6 farewell. The theme was "Favourite Sport Teams". It was great to see so many students come dressed in their sports jersey or colours.

Emerald loved attending the Snake Tails incursion this week. They learnt a lot of informative facts about numerous reptiles and got to see some rare and venomous snakes. We were super lucky and even got to get a photo with one of snakes!

Market Day finally occurred this week! Year 6 students in Lime and Emerald helped set up and sell. Students had been saving up for so long and were excited to finally be able to buy something with their hard earned Busby Bucks!

We also celebrated Easter in our classroom by creating Easter baskets and masks. Unfortunately the Easter Hat Parade was cancelled due to the weather, however we still had fun and enjoyed ourselves in our classroom. Some of us were even lucky enough to win prizes in the Easter Raffle!
